Pastures gone

Pastures gone
TASHI MORUP

Down To Earth:

Ladakh’s Changpa nomads find it difficult to sustain their livestock At an altitude of more than 4,000 metres in the trans-Himalaya, Changthang, the plateau that extends from Tibet to eastern Ladakh, looks like a tiny piece of paradise full of lakes. But venture into its far eastern areas along the border and the illusion wears off as one stumbles upon carcasses of lambs and kids.

Hi Tashi,
Interesting post, nice picture...I didn't know anything about this place. Are the difficulties sustaining livestock in the region due to changes in the climate (ie. less rain) or has it always been difficult to scratch out a living here?

Hi Tashi, interesting post particularly in light of our talk today. I'd be interested in following developments in the region if the government does take a decision on the planned natural reserve. Hope to read about it on your blog. Best, Sonia
